David Nicholas Oswald
David holds the rank of Nidan(2nd degree black belt) in Nintai Ryu Aiki Ju-Jitsu under Pascal and Andre Jacques Serei. He trains regularly in Savate (French kickboxing) and keeps his hand in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and other displines as well. He has practiced Vinyasa Flow Yoga with Moksha Yoga for the past 12 years and maintains a regular training regime.
In complement to his martial arts and health training David works professionally as a Designer and Environmental Scientist. He is founder and President of DE Design and Environment Inc. He is also an Associate Faculty of Royal Roads University and has taught at Concordia University as well.
David is an educator. The principles of education and personal empowerment are the same whether you are learning environmental science or Aiki Ju-Jitsu. In fact, there is a deep connection between the fluidity and harmony in nature and that which is sought in the practice of movement and harmonization with an oncoming attack in Aiki Ju-Jitsu
Westcoast Nintai is an organization based on personal empowerment. All facets of the training contribute to the improvement of individuals - physically and mentally. The key pillars are martial arts, yoga, fitness, and environmental sustainability.
David Oswald is the founder and lead trainer / instructor for Westcoast Nintai. His training in Aiki Ju-Jitsu Nintai Ryu forms the base of the physical practice, yet the other aspects such as yoga and wellness connect seamlessly with this integrated martial art. Aiki Ju-Jitsu originated with the Samurai warriors of Japan and the Serei Family's Nintai system is a modernized form of an age-old, yet highly effective, martial art which is practiced under a code of ethics.
Nintai is Japanese for: perseverance, endurance, and stamina. This is one of the two core principles of Westcoast Nintai:
1. Perseverence in Effort
2. Spirit over Ego
La famille Serei
Although David Oswald's martial arts training was initiated in his childhood with Karate, it really took shape with with the Serei Family in Montreal in 2009. It is an honour for David to be in the martial training lineage of the Serei Family.
Georges Serei is the Patriarch - he was a French Commando during the Second World War, afterwhich he left France to come to Montreal in 1958 and opened the Hakudokan Dojo in Outremont, one of the first judo schools in Quebec, with the help from three partners (Louis Arpin, Jacques About, and Louis Blanc). Georges started to train his two sons André-Jacques and Pascal in Judo at age 4 and 6 a year prior in 1957. This was the start of a life in the martial arts for them.
André-Jacques and Pascal continued to pursue rigorous training and study in martial arts both through physical practice in the dojo, encounters in 'the martial university of life' and through thoughtful reflection of martial principles and the Budo way. They have trained in a variety of disciplines such as Judo, Karate, Ju-Jitsu, Aikido, Aikibudo, Kobudo, and Savate / Boxe Francaise. Through committed, regular, and focused training they have met many Grand Masters from these disciplines and advanced in ranking in the different martial arts, yet also recognized the relations between the disciplines.
The accomplishments of Georges, André-Jacques, and Pascal are numerous and through dedication to advancement of the martial arts they have earned the respect of many practitioners and Masters in Canada and worldwide.
The system of Nintai Ryu Aiki Ju-Jitsu was founded and is directed by Kyoshi Pascal Serei and is a product of his lifelong commitment and practice of martial arts. He consulted with Georges and André-Jacques in its formation.
Is martial arts about being aggressive and getting in fights? Well, honestly, sometimes it may be. We live in a world where conflict, violence, and confrontation are becoming commonplace and being vigilant about your personal safety is a good idea. With that said, the Westcoast Nintai philosophy is not to start conficts, however, if they do arise, the aim will be to finish them.
The martial arts are a manifestation of the 'Budo Way' which is the path of the warrior. This path involves mental discipline, physical training, acquisition of combat skills, and carrying an underlying respect for others and yourself. Training is the path to understanding and mastery of the martial arts.
There are many facets to the martial arts - cultural history, physical fitness, combat theory, and fighting skills. The benefits are numerous and include: personal security, physical well being, mental health, and positive and constructive social relations and connections, to name a few. People have had their lives turned around due to the benefits of martial arts.
Training with Westcoast Nintai will bring you these benefits if you commit to the practice. There is a code of ethics underwhich training takes place. The results can be many, but one clear outcome will be the acquisition of self defense and combat skills.
